The City of Lanesboro established a Public Utilities Commission to oversee all administrative functions of the following utilities: water, sewer, electric, and garbage. The Utility Commission consists of three council-appointed members. The Commission must hold one regular meeting per month and has all administrative authority over the day-to-day functions of the utilities as stated above.
The Lanesboro Public Utilities Commission has the ability to provide sewer services from its own Wastewater Treatment Plant and water from two wells, and a Water Treatment Facility for which it owns and maintains. Electricity is generated from the hydro-wheel, or the diesel engine that is housed in the Utility Plant. Electric energy is also purchased from Mi-Energy Cooperative. The Lanesboro Public Utilities contracts the service of garbage removal through Advanced Disposal. The Lanesboro Public Utilities has developed into a self-sustained fully operational utility service for the City of Lanesboro.
